SUMMARY:The Long Shadows of Historical Trauma: Unraveling the Intergenerati
onal Impacts of Forced Displacement and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by: New Zealand Psychological Association\n\n Title: The
Long Shadows of Historical Trauma: Unraveling the Intergenerational Impac
ts of Forced Displacement and Colonialism\n\n Date & Time: Tuesday 10th Ju
ne, 9am-12pm New Zealand time => Monday 9th June, 5pm-8pm US EDT\n\n Durat
	ion: 3 hours\n\n ----------------------\n\n Description:\n\n The historica
l trauma of colonialism and forced displacement has intergenerational and
transgenerational impact.\n\n In her 3 hour workshop, Linda Thai will firs
t ground us in a deeply humanistic and keenly clinical understanding of th
e intersection of trauma and grief. From there she will weave together sto
ries and research to bring to light the intergenerational impact of forced
migration, by bringing together the research around Adult Children of Hol
ocaust Survivors, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Adult Children of Veterans
with PTSD, and Historical Collective Trauma of Indigenous Americans.\n\n
Forty to fifty per cent of displaced populations are children.\n\n The dec
ontextualization of historical trauma over the course of time can lead to
challenges in adulthood that are often easily overlooked - or even patholo
gized - by many mental health professionals. \n\n This larger landscape of
traumatic grief, traumatic loss, traumatic homesickness and the ambiguity
of these unnameable, unmetabolized experiences has a transgenerational im
pact that needs to be named in order to be healed.\n\n Completing the circ
le of grief for survivors (and the descendants of survivors) of displaceme
nt requires support in as they seek to learn, reclaim and mend disrupted s
	torylines and songlines.\n\n ----------------------\n\n Objectives: \n\n D
eepen theoretical understanding of grief and traumaIdentify the preconditi
ons within family of origin and the conditions within society that impacts
an individual's capacity to grieveLearn three interventions for unpacking
anger as an unresolved grief.Apply Francis Weller’s “Five Gates of Grief”
model to complex developmental trauma survivors
· Lateralize the conceptualization of refugees beyond the UNHCR definition
to encompass multiple trajectories of displacement.\n\n · Differentiate be
tween refugees and immigrants.\n\n · Identify the main stages of a refugee
journey.\n\n · Explain intergenerational trauma to encompass the impact o
f forced migration, combined with acculturation and enculturation pressure
s, upon the next generation.\n\n · Identify expressions of ambiguous grief
, traumatic grief and traumatic homesickness.\n\n · Identify how the decon
textualization of historical trauma can result in the pathologizing and st
ereotyping of cultures, families and individuals.\n\n · Identify the vario
us expressions - emotionally, psychologically, and behaviorally - of unmet
abolized grief, at the individual, family, cultural and societal levels.\n
\n · Identify ways to support someone who is seeking to learn the historic
al context of their family and peoples\n\n · Identify the key features of
Narrative Exposure Therapy that can be used for individuals who are seekin
g to interview family members and community members in order to archive th
eir potentially traumatic stories and lived experiences\n\n URL:https://ww
